To Build a Fire is a short story by Jack London with only two main characters. It is about a day in the life of a man and his dog, traveling across the arctic left with only their thoughts and instincts. I broke the story up into three sections: dawn, midday and dusk to represent the way nature dictates time. The man’s selfish and disillusioned thoughts of conquering nature are in red italics, and the dog’s instinctive thoughts of turning back and finding shelter are in handwritten type on vellum. Photographs in the book are of man-made things in nature that have been deteriorated over time, as well as old advertisements that boast the “power” of man’s inventions.
